Ten-man Golds lose out in a five-goal thriller

JAKE HOLMES bagged a second-half brace as ten-man Littlehampton Football Club fell to a 3-2 reverse at Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday evening.

Holmes’ double and an early strike from Jack Lyons ensured Heath completed a Southern Combination League Premier Division double over Golds.

In fact, Tuesday’s defeat was the third time Heath have got the better of George Gaskin’s side this season.

Alongside the two league games, a 2-0 Sussex RUR Charity Cup fourth round success means Heath have a hat-trick over Littlehampton this season.

The turning point on Tuesday came 20 minutes from time when Golds defender Josh Bates was shown a straight red card.

Up until that point, it was an even affair with Lyons’ early strike being cancelled out when Gaskin levelled a minute before the interval.

But when Bates was left as the last man and hauled a home side player down in the box, a penalty was given.

Holmes slammed the spot-kick home, which left Golds with it all to do.

Holmes added a second with two minutes to go as they wrapped up all three points.

Littlehampton substitute Marcus Robertshaw pulled one back but it was all too late as Heath went on to secure all three points.

Golds player-boss Gaskin admitted it was a frustrating evening for his side and said: “It was a really frustrating evening for us. We should have buried them in the first half with the chances we had.

“To be fair, their goalkeeper had a great game and made four or five great saves.

“They scored a goal via a deflection and then had a penalty.

“I felt we kept the ball better with ten men and still could have got something.

“They got a third when we were throwing men forward and chasing the game.

“That’s the third time we have lost to them and it’s really frustrating.

“It was a game we should have got something from, if I’m honest.”
