They came away with three awards of excellence, for costuming character, visual enhancement and entertainment, but were not placed in the top five.

The junior school competition, held at Portsmouth Guildhall, attracted an audience of more than 1,700 people.

Ken Ellcome, deputy mayor of Portsmouth, said: “I enjoyed a brilliant evening. There is so much talent amongst these youngsters from all these schools across the south of England.

“I’m really looking forward to next year, the talent was unbelievable. It must have been a really tough job for the judges.”

Jo Ellcome, deputy mayoress of Portsmouth, added: “It is my first time at the Rock Challenge and I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m absolutely blown away by the performances of these young children.

“Their discipline, their team spirit, the choreography, the colours. What can I say? It’s those teachers who have taken them there and it’s themselves that have wanted to be where they are tonight. They’re all winners in my view.”

The aim of the Be Your Best Foundation is to encourage young people to lead healthy lifestyles and be their best without the need for tobacco, alcohol or other drugs.

Director Glyn Wright said: “Absolutely amazing. A stunning evening and incredible that children from seven years upwards can in fact perform to that standard.”
