The untold story of suffragette legend

The Under Ground Theatre is the setting for Lady Connie And the Suffragettes on Thursday March 10 at 7.30pm.

Classworks Theatre in association with Cambridge Devised Theatre present this new play written by Ros Connelly and directed by Jenny Culank.

It explores Lady Constance Lytton’s brave role in the Suffragette Movement, her privileged background and her development into a heroic icon. The nuances and drama of a life torn between the private and the public, love and duty, family and cause are drawn from Constance’s own writings in her letters, diaries and her book Prisons and Prisoners.

Constance struggles with the constrictions of life as “an upper-class, financially dependent, useless, congenitally shy spinster” and the fluctuations of an achingly sad love affair. Determined to expose the double standards and barbaric treatment committed against the suffragettes, she put herself at immense personal risk with devastating consequences. A short introductory talk will be given by historian and biographer Lyndsey Jenkins and the play will be followed by a Q&A with the cast. Tickets: £12 (UGT members/students £10).
