Worthing's beat Brighton in close-fought water polo win

IN the Sussex Senior Water Polo knock out competition, Worthing beat Brighton despite trailing 5-8 until two minutes from time.

THIS was an exciting match against a much improved and spirited Brighton team who played their part in an entertaining fixture.

With a handicap of 6 goals to overcome this always looked to be a difficult fixture and this certainly proved to be the case.

Worhting made a slow start failing to employ the desired tactics and as a result at the end of the first period they trailed 2-3 which was an overall deficit of 2-9.

From this point their play began to improve but they were still guilty of missing simple opportunities which kept the score closer than it might have been.

Going into the final period they still trailed 5-8, but a strong finish saw them take a 2 goal lead with just over 2 minutes left to play.

As a result they ran the clock down successfully to record a narrow victory.

Ben Alcorn had a fine game in goal including a spectacular penalty save and it was pleasing to see that our squad of 12 included 6 junior players.

The team realised that they had under-performed but credit must go to Brighton who played well for long periods of the match.
