West Sussex schools' athletics stars impress in Portsmouth

YEAR 7 and 8 pupils turned in some outstanding individual performances at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth, when the West Sussex West school sport partnership held their championships.

Among the Year 7 girls, Bishop Luffa pupils caught the eye with Sophie Anne Haigh winning the long jump and 200m and Alex Jarrold the high jump and shot.

In the team event, Bishop Luffa had the biggest winning margin of the day ahead of Chichester High School and Lavant House. The Year 8 girls’ team standings saw Bishop Luffa beat the High School and Lavant House. The latter had Jess Breach as athlete of the match after she won the 100m and 200m.

In the boys’ team events, Bishop Luffa had a six-point margin over Chichester High School in the Year 7 contest, with Midhurst Rother College third. Seaford College had the outstanding athlete: sprinter Jake Goosen.

In the Year 8 boys, Bishop Luffa completing the event’s first clean sweep, scoring 138 points to Chichester High School’s 135. The Regis School in third was back with 47 points.

There was a double individual win in shot and discus from Peter Thomas of Midhurst Rother College while Manhood and Felpham picked up wins from Andrea Almeida in the 800m and Harry Lyne in the 1,500m.

Collins Alfred from Bishop Luffa just got the better of Chichester High School’s Ted Maddocks for athlete of the match thanks to a sprint double highlighted by a new 100m record.
