United for relegation

WORTHING UNITED'S 0-0 draw at lowly Oakwood ended three successive defeats. But it was not enough to save them being qualified to be relegated along with Rye & Iden United and already-down Littlehampton Town.

All the bottom five drew and the point each for Redhill (1-1 at Wick) and Oakwood saved them and sentenced the Mavericks to intended Divison 2 football next season with three games still to play.

United have conceded 94 goals in 35 games and this was only their fourth clean sheet of the season. Their last was on October 7, in the RUR Cup against Rye, They drew 0-0 at Selsey in the league in August 29, then won 1-0 in the FA Cup preliminary round at Sidley United five days later.

But there is a scenaro in which United will stay up. If Eastbourne Town finish in the top two of Division, as looks probable, they will go up to the Ryman league Division 1 South. This would mean Division I would retain one of the relegated three to maintain numbers. That would be third-bottom Rye.

But at the top of Division 2, Westfield will not have the facilities for Division 1 should they qualify for promotion. Therefore the second-bottom club in Division 1 would stay up and that would be United if they can remain above Littlehampton.

United have withdrawn from the County League Reserves Section Premier Division after failing to fulfil four successive fixtures.
