Tricia takes on ex-world champ

TRICIA Fry will be hoping to spring a major surprise when she takes on one of the finest bowlers in the country.

The lady member of Egerton Park IBC will face Carol Ashby, a former World Champion in mixed pairs, in the area final of the National Final Singles on Friday February 2.

She said: "I've played against her and beaten her in team competitions, but singles is different. She's like a machine."

Tricia will be looking for a faster start than that she got off to at the same Langney IBC venue in the corresponding stage of the Champion of Champion Singles last Friday.

She went eight-down early on against another Hampden Park IBC player, Pat Bain, in unfamiliarly quick conditions.

Tricia gradually came to terms with the speed of the green and clawed her way back to within three at one stage before eventually succumbing 21-13.

"It's so quick that you're holding back instead of pushing through, but it was a super game once I got going," added Tricia, who was heartened by support from many of her club-mates.

All three players will then represent Sussex in the Atherley Trophy against Somerset tomorrow, seeking to follow-up their comprehensive victory over two-time defending champions Kent.
