Town bowls tournament gets under way

THE 43rd Bexhill Ladies' Open Bowls Tournament got under way on Monday morning when Mayor Cllr Joy Hughes delivered the opening two woods.

The first three days of the annual competition were all hit by rain, but according to honorary general secretary Pat Child the adverse weather hasn't diluted the enthusiasm of the participants.

"The rain doesn't stop us," she said. "It's all on schedule and there's been some lovely bowls. It's just a shame that the (number of) spectators have been down because of the weather."

The event, which is being held at the Polegrove Bowling Greens, has attracted well over 100 players, many of whom are from local clubs, although there is a healthy smattering from other parts of the county.

They're all vying for the Ladies' Singles, Ladies' Pairs and Mixed Pairs titles, the finals of which are due to take place mid-afternoon on Saturday July 30.
