Tight league there for the taking

The league title looks as though it could be there for the taking if South Saxons can perform on a consistent basis.

Everybody has been dropping points during an intriguing first third of the South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One season.

After more surprise results last weekend, only goal difference is keeping Saxons off the top of the table and just four points separate the top five.

Saxons captain Paddy Cornish said: “I keep looking at it and thinking if we had won the Crawley (II) game and if we beat Mid-Sussex (II), we would be four or five points clear by now.”

Cornish knows that Saxons’ next two games - away to third-placed Brighton & Hove III tomorrow (Saturday) and fifth-placed Worthing II next weekend - could be crucial.

“If we can get through those with maximum points, we’ll be looking pretty good,” he added. “If we can get to Christmas on top, that’s the first goal.” Saxons expect to be unchanged tomorrow.

Standings (all played seven matches): 1 Mid-Sussex II 16pts, 2 SOUTH SAXONS 16, 3 Brighton & Hove III 15, 4 Penguin 12, 5 Worthing II 12, 6 Crowborough 10, 7 Eastbourne II 9, 8 Middleton & Bognor 9, 9 Hailsham 8, 10 Lewes III 7, 11 Crawley II 7, 12 Horsham III 1.
