Sidley win clinches promotion

Sidley United clinched promotion on an exciting final afternoon of the football season.

The Blues made sure of a top three finish in Division Two of the Sussex County League with an impressive 1-0 victory away to fifth-placed Loxwood.

Jack Franklin scored the all-important goal with a stunning 57th minute free kick from just outside the penalty area into the top corner.

Kenny Pogue also struck the crossbar as Sidley, who fielded dual registered Hastings United defenders Nathan Russell and Rhys Whyborne, controlled the game thereafter.

Sidley made the long journey to the north west corner of the county knowing a draw would be enough unless fourth-placed Little Common won by nine goals at home to Rustington.

As it was they had to settle for four, with Lewis Hole bagging two of them to make it 36 for the season, Jared Lusted scoring one to make it 20 for the campaign and Chas Lister netting the other.

And Rye United blew a third chance to secure the title after losing 4-1 away to a Worthing United side which moves above Sidley on goal difference into second spot. Dominic Clarke scored the consolation.

But Worthing still have a game remaining and if they win by two clear goals at home to Littlehampton Town on Monday morning, they will leapfrog Rye on goal difference and snatch the title.

Full reports on each of these games will appear in Friday's Observers.
