RUGBY: Littlehampton return to action with narrow win

Littlehampton started the match composed and in control, but one small error let Pulborough's winger through with a lightning run from his own 22 to score.

The Littlehampton forwards were quick to reply, with Craig Boddington breaking from the scrum. Ben Best in the backs made ground and passed out to Gary Keirle, who switched it to Gavin Wood and back in to Matt Eames, who touched down but it went unconverted.

Littlehampton's big pack was dominating the scrums, which made it difficult for Pulborough, as they won most of the scrums. In open play, Littlehampton's forwards were continuing running crash balls, and finally Kevin Porter went through to score, with again the try going unconverted.

Pulborough's line of defence was well-drilled, otherwise Littlehampton would have pushed further into the lead before half-time.

Another solo run from Pulborough's winger gained his side a converted try and Littlehampton then had a reshuffle as Paul Edmunds went off injured. Billy Johnstone went on and John Singleton was pushed into the front row.

Littlehampton captain Richard Russell then managed to break though and score, with Bobby Mathews converting.

Pulborough took advantage from a penalty in their 22, and made ground to score and convert.

But Carl Keirle and Bryan Newman were then introduced and the fresh legs, combined with huge efforts from the forwards, managed to keep Pulborough on the back foot until the whistle.
