Pulborough face relegation sweat

Pulborough Rugby Club’s fate is no longer in their hands after Saturday’s loss at Vigo consigned them to a bottom-three finish in London South East Division 3.

The Black and Whites went in to this must-win game against their winless hosts with a depleted side, and were blown-away by conceding 19 points before half time.

Despite confidence in clawing that back down Vigo’s slope, Pulborough heads dropped when the home side scored another try early in the second half. And with his side now 14 points adrift of fourth-bottom Folkestone, skipper Richard Nicholls admits his side has to hope only two are relegated, as happened last year.

“It would be unrealistic to think we can get out of the bottom three,” he said. “The failure to get any points from the last two games have taken it out of our hands.”

Boro barely got going in the first half as they trailed 19-0, and only sparked into life after going further behind.

Toby Loxley scored their first unconverted try as he broke off the side of a ruck, and Simon Burfiend, who stepped-in at short notice, added the second in similar fashion. Nicholls added: “There was no lack of effort, they were the better team.”
