PRIORY HAVE THIRD TITLE NICKED

TARRING PRIORY have lost all three titles they won last year. Having earlier this month conceded the Stracey Shield and Brodie Tray to Lancing, their Littlehampton Gazette League crown was pinched from their heads on their own Church House green by East Preston on Saturday.

Priory won the match 76-69 (8-2) but EP got the two points they required, and Priory must settle for runners-up spot.

As against Lancing in their final Stracey showdown clash, at Lancing Manor, the Friars of Priory had needed maximum points and could not manage it. This time, to retain the Gazette League championship, they needed all 10 from East Preston and then all 10 in their final match against Chichester on Sunday.

EP, however, needed just one rink from the match to be champions and it was their last match. The four who got it were George Walton, Jim Crome, Mervyn Hilton and John Holt.

They defeated Chris Ide, Paul Hodges, Wally Burrows and Clunky Clarke 19-14.
