Back in action at Fontwell - and Moore back in form

The going was heavy as racing action returned to Fontwell Park – but not for Gary Moore.

West Sussex handler Moore got off to the perfect start, with son Josh steering Golden Boy Grey to victory – running on strongly under pressure from two out, to take the Jonjooneillracing.co.uk 99 Novices’ Hurdle by three-quarters of a length, at 11/4.

The pair were denied a quick-fire double, with Le Milos being too strong up the run-in – winning the Free Horse Racing Tips At tipsterempire.co.uk Novices’ Handicap Chase by 3½ lengths at 6/1 for Welsh duo Tim Vaughan and Alan Johns.

Just three went to post for the Attheraces.com Juvenile Hurdle, with the Moore team again beaten into second, this time by the in-form Tom Symonds’ Hystery Bere who drew clear a shade costly after the last to win by six lengths, at 11/2 under Aidan Coleman.

The Moores’ finally landed their second of the day in the Download The Star Sports App Handicap Chase, with Cheque En Blanc stealing the race from the 2/1 fav late on – returning a 4/1 winner and a 17.75/1 double for the course's leading trainer.

Alkopop continued on from last month’s Chepstow success, with another Welsh jockey – this time James Bowen – guiding Toby Lawes’ 11/8F home in front, by 1¾ lengths in the Starsport.bet Handicap Hurdle.

The 13-year-old Love The Leader, and jockey Mitchell Bastyan, landed a second win of the season in the Fruity O’Rooney HOTSR Conditional Jockeys’ Veterans’ Handicap Chase, by a short-head. Only two finished the gruelling 3m 2f trip, with the winner returning 9/4, for trainer Johnny Farrelly.

Very much the theme of the day, Gary Moore took another second in the final race of the day – the Follow At The Races On Twitter Intermediate Open NH Flat Race, with 12/1-shot Coronado Joe taking the honours by two lengths, for Chris Gordon and Nick Scholfield.

Now the race is on for the team to prepare the West Sussex turf ahead of their next behind closed doors fixture - National Spirit Hurdle raceday on Sunday, February 28.
