Olympic sailor contests event at Bexhill

A BRITISH Olympic sailor is heading to Bexhill.

Laura Baldwin, who came 23rd in last year's Games after finishing fourth in the last of 11 races, will be taking part in the National Championships of the Europe single-handed dinghy at Bexhill Sailing Club.

The event is expected to attract around 30 visitors to take on the home fleet on Saturday July 30 and Sunday.

Bexhill Sailing Club has won the privilege of hosting such a high-profile competition courtesy of having staged a very successful open meeting last year.

"The club is very pleased to be doing it," said committee member Richard Eagleton, who has been heavily involved with the event's organisation, "and it should be a good weekend."

The prizes will be presented by the commodore's lady, Stephanie Sprigings, on Sunday afternoon.

To complete a bumper weekend for the club, Bexhill will also be the home of the Laser South Eastern Traveller Open Meeting on Sunday.

The Traveller Open is part of a series for this Olympic single-handed dinghy and will bring together sailors from clubs throughout the region.

The three races will be hotly-contested, not least by the strong Bexhill fleet.
