Jono in great race

JONO Ketley from St Bede's at The Dicker had a great battle with Brighton's Charlie Grice for Sussex honours at the highly successful South East Schools Inter-county Cross-country championships organised by Sussex Schools AA at Bexhill Down.

Traditionally the most muddy and wet cross-country course in the county, conditions were severe but better than expected.

In the junior boys 3.5km, Ketley ran a sensible race holding back through the early stages and coming strongly at the end to finish tenth in 15min 09sec, just one second and one place behind his rival.

With teams from Surrey, Hampshire, Kent, Essex and Berkshire appearing, tenth was an excellent placing.

Brandon Theoret, who like Ketley is only in his first year in this age group, also had a good run filling 36th in 15min 58sec and helped the Sussex team into third team spot while Jago Leckie (Hailsham) finished 47th in 16:13sec.

Chailey's Becky Hawkes, who missed the Schools Championship two weeks back through injury, made a welcome return to competition and was the second Sussex runner to finish in the senior girls 4km race.

Hawkes ran a sensible race not pushing herself too much in the tough conditions to finish 33rd in 25min 27sec.
