Hectic finish to Sidley season

SIDLEY United is bracing itself for an action-packed conclusion to the Sussex County Football League season.

The Blues have 19 Division One matches, plus a minimum of two and maximum of four cup ties still to play.

There are only 11 Saturdays between now and the scheduled end of the season on May 5 so United are likely to face midweek games every single week.

Joint manager Andy Laskey said: "The teams with the fittest and strongest squads will be the ones picking up the points when you're playing twice a week and, if we get everyone fit, I still maintain we've got a pretty decent squad."

Such a backlog is bound to test the depth of any set-up, never mind one which was without around eight players for last weekend's marvellous single goal victory at East Preston.

The list of absentees shouldn't be quite as lengthy for the visit from 12th-placed Wick on Saturday February 24 because Graham Morris and Jordan Wood are back from holiday.

But Josh Brown, Steve Morris and Adam Day remain doubtful, while Jimmy Watson probably won't be ready for another week.

The front side's first evening game since their floodlights were re-certificated earlier this month will be against second-placed Crowborough Athletic on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.

New Rye United manager Dave Shearing was considering dispatching a seven-day approach for striker Scott McDonald this week.

Little Common will bid to bounce back from their agonising midweek cup defeat when they return to league action.

The Commoners were beaten for the first time in 2007 after surrendering a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining against Hastings United reserves on Tuesday night.

Ninth-placed Common will hope to make amends when they entertain a sixth-placed Hurstpierpoint club which beat them 3-0 during October in Sussex Division Three tomorrow.

Chas Lister (ankle ligaments) is likely to be sidelined for at least a month, while Chris Steward (foot) is doubtful.

Bexhill United will hope to finally get back out on to the field after successive postponements in the same division.

Bill Trivett's second-bottom United side, whose trip to Uckfield Town last weekend was called-off for the second time, will entertain Pease Pottage Village tomorrow.

Bexhill drew away to third-placed Pottage in Trivett's first game back at the helm during October, but the Crawley outfit has won four out of five league encounters since.

Key striker Dave Carey is unavailable after beginning his well-documented 142-day suspension on Monday. Kick-off in all of matches on Saturday is 3pm.
