Green ladies can't avoid the drop

ON the penultimate, promotion- and relegation-deciding weekend of the summer season, several of the Green Tennis Club's teams were involved in vital matches.

The men's sixth team visited neighbours Hastings Tennis Centre on Saturday. Twins Paul and Ian Meredith comfortably won both their rubbers in straight sets, while colleagues Dave Double and Darren Thomas scored one more success to ensure maximum points for the team. This gave them nine points from six matches which should be good enough to earn them promotion.

Meanwhile, the men's fourths were entertaining East Hoathly. A fine performance saw both pairs record two convincing wins. Chris Kilroy partnered Richard King while Mike Sherwood teamed up with Ray Swatridge. With seven points from their six matches the side will probably remain in the same division next summer.

Sunday morning saw the ladies seconds chasing a point at Crowborough. Top pair Joyce Bush and Christine Greenwood were untroubled in defeating Crowborough's second strings, but against the first were 5-1 down in the second set tie-break before bouncing back to take it 8-6 and clinch the match 6-4, 7-6. The team should now be promoted, and a point from their last match on Sunday will make them champions.

The men's thirds entertained the Weald club from Hassocks on Sunday morning. Honours were shared, but both Green pairs got close to beating Weald's first pair, while defeating the seconds in straight sets. The team were John Wond with Ian Oliver, and Nick Lowy with Gary Hammond.

Finally, the ladies first team faced Eastbourne's Hampden Park that same afternoon. 11-year-old Suzy Larkin on her debut found her opponent too powerful and went down in straight sets, as did her mother Claire at number two.

Beaula Page came up trumps with a 7-5, 7-5 win at number three, but Sharon Norris lost at number four. Beaula and Sharon then teamed up to win their doubles, but despite a close first set the Larkins went down to give their visitors a 4-2 win, and sentence the home side to probable relegation.
