Green gang serve up tennis treat at Chichester

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club hosted their final summer series junior tennis competition '“ a ten-and-under mini-tennis green tournament.

Green ball is a great way for players to continue their progress from orange ball mini tennis.

It is played on a full tennis court, with bigger rackets and green balls which are a little softer than yellow tennis balls. It’s the next stage to go through before the youngsters start playing with a full compression yellow ball on a full-sized court and it helps players work on and improve all aspects of their game.

This four-hour event had ten entries with the first stage a round-robin format of two groups. The competitors played one short set with a tie-break at 4-4 and the top player from each group went through to the final, in which William Broom beat Alexander Jones 4-2 in a fantastic match to claim the gold medal.

Tournament organiser and club coach Peter Cook said: “As with every event we have held so far this season we have been blessed with great weather.

“It was very hot on court and the players coped really well.

“For some, this was their first ever competition experience, so to come out in the heat and perform the way they did was fantastic.”
