Former England footballer and manager Glenn Hoddle, Olympic silver medallist diver Peter Waterfield and ex-Northern Ireland footballer Mark Williams were among the stars to tee off for the Chestnut Tree House at Goodwood.

Organised by former Southampton and Wales goalkeeper Paul Jones, the day raised more than £10,000 for the hospice, which cares for children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses across East and West Sussex and south-east Hampshire.

It took place on the Park course – 18th-century parkland surrounding Goodwood House – with golfers enjoying a shotgun start and a number of competitions including longest drive nd nearest the pin. It was the 12th golf day Jones has organised for the hospice and he said: “It was once again a huge success.

“It’s always a popular event in the fundraising calendar, with teams and celebrities always keen to take part.

“It’s a fantastic venue to hold a golf day with its stunning setting on the South Downs, frindly and helpful staff and location of the hotel.

“A big thank-you goes to all those who supported the day and helped us raise such an incredible amount of money for the Chestnut Tree House.”

Jones was recently awarded the outstanding individual fundraiser award from the hospice for raising more than £110,000.

Golf At Goodwood are supporting Hampshire County Cricket Club captain Jimmy Adams’ benefit year to help raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.

The Goodwood estate has a long association with cricket. The ground in front of Goodwood House is one of the oldest grounds in existence, with the first set of written rules drawn up and game played in 1727.

The fourth Duke of Richmond was a backer of Thomas Lord when he purchased the land for the home of cricket and the colours of the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) are almost identical to the Duke of Richmond’s racing colours.

On Tuesday, September 29, Goodwood will host a sporting day with teams of four competing in a day of clay pigeon shooting and golf.

The benefit committee have put a spin on the classic BBC golf programme ‘A Round With Alliss’ and devised ‘A Round With Adams’ where successful bidders will be joined by a professional cricketing colleague of Adams to go head to head shooting clays, followed up with 18 holes on the iconic Downs course.

Adams said: “I am thrilled to have Goodwood support my benefit year and the great charity Parkinson’s UK. I’ve been lucky to visit Goodwood a few times now and am excited about being able to enjoy the wonderful facilities and hospitality.

“I’m not sure my golf skills are ready for the challenge that the Downs course presents, but am looking forward to spending the day away from cricket in a great setting getting to know some of our great supporters.

“The sporting day in September looks like being a cracking day and a number of my team-mates are looking forward to shooting some clays and then holing some putts!”

Stuart Gillett, general manager of Golf At Goodwood, added: “We are delighted to support Jimmy this year to take him away from the cricket pitch and place him into a different environment.

“It will give those that support Jimmy a great opportunity to get to know him better and gain an insight into the life of a professional cricketer. Jimmy has chosen a wonderful charity in Parkinson’s UK to raise money for and Goodwood are delighted to be able to help such a fantastic cause.”

Golf at Goodwood are offering fun for the whole family with free golf sessions in Chichester’s Priory Park.

In conjunction with National Golf Month, Goodwood’s team of PGA professionals will be on hand on Sunday, May 24, from midday to 3pm to welcome families for a day of fun and golfing activities.

Tri-Golf and Golf Xtreme equipment will be provided along with an inflatable net for people to learn the basics of the golf swing, while the Goodwood team will also be running light-hearted competitions throughout the day.

“With last year’s event proving an absolute hit with the local community, we are delighted to be running another family fun day in Priory Park,” said Golf At Goodwood general manager Stuart Gillett.

“The day will provide families with the perfect chance to be introduced to the game of golf in a fun and relaxed environment.”

Goodwood are offering a number of free golf lessons throughout National Golf Month for people of all ages and abilities. Mixed, individual and ladies’ sessions are available.

Goodwood ladies held their annual spring meeting on the Downs course.

With a field of 40 players testing their mettle on the newly-renovated bunkers, Sarah Simpson was crowned the outright winner by two points with an impressive score of 37 points.

Second place was decided on countback of the last six holes which went to Pauline Senior, while Helen Todd finished third.

The Stableford-format event started with registration in the pro shop, with current form and new methodologies learnt during recent lessons at Goodwood hot topics of conversation.

The atmosphere was one of the many highlights of the day with the shotgun start enhancing the social element to the day, allowing the ladies time to meet and greet each other both before and after their round.

Near-perfect conditions were seen and the longest drive and nearest-the-pin contests added to the competition. These were won respectively by Sarah Simpson and Sammy Kendall.

Scoring was impressive, taking into account the new layout of certain bunkers and the reopening of unseen greens that have been closed.

CHICHESTER

Chichester ladies have been busy with league matches, friendlies, knockout competitions and club mornings.

In the Mail on Sunday third-round match away to Gosport & Stokes Bay, Chichester couldn’t quite secure the win they had been hoping for. The team of Helen Ball, Mary-Lou Litton, Caroline Hawkes, Jennifer Sherwood and Fiona Walsh fought valiantly.

In the Morrice Fours, Chichester had a very good away win against The Dyke. In this competition all games have to be played to a result, with no halves allowed.

The first pair won while the second and third had to play on to the 20th hole, with Chichester winning 2-1. The team comprised Helen Ball, Lisa Mitchelmore, Mary Lou Litton, Caroline Hawkes, Kathy Donohoe and Jennifer Sherwood.

In division two, Chichester lost 4-3 to Sweetwoods with all the matches won or lost on the last two holes. The opponents were all lower handicaps so this was a great effort by the team of Yvonne Dunckley, Jennifer Sherwood, Lisa Jackson, Val Edwards, Heddie Straw, Erica Ellicott and Terry Payne.

Against Crowborough the team went down 5-2. This match was well fought with good wins from Jennifer Sherwood and Erica Ellicott and three lost matches decided on the 18th hole. Also playing were Yvonne Dunckley, Lisa Jackson, Lyn Plowman, Terry Payne and Fiona Walsh.

Away to Mid Sussex, the team of Yvonne Dunckley, Lisa Jackson, Jennifer Sherwood, Erica Ellicott, Heddie Straw, Terry Payne and Fiona Walsh secured a great 4-3 win.

The weather was blustery with a typical heavy April shower on the last few holes.

In division three, the team of Erica Ellicott, Heddie Straw, Fiona Walsh, Terry Payne, Val Swain, Marilyn Forward and Jeannie Blackman lost away to Slinfold. On a sunny day, everybody played well taking most of the matches to the 18th hole.

At home to Littlehampton, the team played well to win 5-2. Jane Buckley stepped in at the last minute and winning her game too. Also involved were Heddie Straw, Terry Payne, Fiona Walsh, Val Swain, Sue Bond, and Sandi Johnstone.

There was another fine win of 6½-½ for the team at home against East Brighton. Lyn Plowman came into the team and won her game. Terry Payne, Fiona Walsh, Marilyn Forward, Val Swain, Sue Bond and Vron Bicknelle all gave good performances.

Sang Porter achieved a hole in one on the 15th hole on the Cathedral course during a club knockout match. The shot clinched victory in the match.

BOGNOR

In an excellent turnout, 91 Bognor men took part in the popular Glover Cup, which is a bogey competition. Scores reflected the very blustery conditions.

The overall winner was Pete Austin with a great score of plus four and it was another good day for Gary Embleton, who last week won the Hardwick Bowl.

Bognor’s mixed team entertained Ifield GC in the annual Botfield Trophy match. The venue rotates every year, and home advantage came to the fore as Bognor ran out 7-1 winners.

The competition is hotly contested and the win for Bognor cured years of heartache – they have won it only once in the past five years.

Bognor captain Jim Morris proudly raised the trophy and paid credit to Ifield’s long-standing friendship, but no doubt the away match next year will be a real tough encounter. Both teams had a wonderful round of golf followed by a superb meal.

Results: Jim Morris & Sheila Sergeant won 5&4 over Ian Burgess & Ingrid Birrell-Gray, Simon Watts & Sue Doughty halved with Bob Hazelwood & Sally Brown, Ian & Gill Twyford won 4&3 over Steve Tigg & Jane Rodgers, Rob & Sue Redmond won 1 up over Mark Robinson & Lisa O’Donnell, Mark and Lyn Watson won 2 up over David Hughes & Gill Samspon, Peter & Georgina McCormack won 4&3 over Graham & Mary Walker, Taff Coulton & Barabara Trenchard halved with John & Terry Trusson, David Chalmers & Eileen Morris won 5&3 over Brian & Pam Dodge.

Bognor ladies battled against force-eight winds to play for the Elliott Methuselah Trophy. Despite the horrendous weather, the winner was Sheila Hendrick.

COWDRAY PARK

The weather was distictly unpleasant for Cowdray Park members in their monthly medal, with heavy early-morning rain and driving winds. Despite the conditions, scoring was still surprisingly good, especially in division three, where five players beat par, including Paul White, whose nett 65 earned him promotion to division two.

Division-one winner was Mark Upton with a nett 67, while division two went to Adam Exall, the only player in that division to beat par.

Cowdray Park seniors welcomed Ifield for the their second home match on consecutive days. This match marked the debut of Peter Laws as match manager and he marked his appointment with a comfortable 5-2 win.

Laws’ partner Mel Milburn was on fire on the front nine and he needed to be as the visitors’ Vic Wells sank six single putts before the hosts came out on top as 5&4 winners.

Richard Histed and John Doran gelled well, with Histed on top form and Doran giving a fine exhibition of driving and the pair came out 3-2 winners. David Tilley and Barry Barry Overington teamed up for an easy 6&4 win – in no little way thanks to Overington’s four pars and birdie.

Dave Lucking, playing off five, delivered his usual array of birdies but he and partner Bill Brownlee were pressed all the way by their opponents before coming out on top two up.

Derek Smith and Graham Evans won 3&2 to give Cowdray a 5-0 lead. The hosts lost both matches teeing from the 17th tee but still racked up another victory by 5-2.

Cowdray Park seniors continued their busy period of inter-club matches when they made the short journey to face Liphook on a course renowned for lightning-fast greens.

The home side came out all guns blazing and easily won the first three matches before Cowdray Park dug in and bravely fought back to earn a 4-3 victory.

In the opening match, home club captain Martin MacPherson birdied the first hole then parred the long second into a gale-force wind.

Before the Cowdray pair of Brian Carpenter and Chris Hoare knew what had hit them, they found themselves five down after six holes.

The next two matches went the way of the home side before Cowdray were able to areverse the trend through Ken Marjoram and Barry Overington with a two-up win, soon followed by a stunning 7&6 win from old friends David Tilley and Wally Mitchell.

Attacking from the start, they were six up by the turn, an advantage they never lost. Their comprehensive win came without them losing a hole on one of the toughest courses in the area.

The fightback continued with a 5&4 win from seniors’ captain Sam Howes and Colin Tebbutt, the latter playing particularly well, to draw their team level at 3-3.

It all depended on the final match and this proved to be the most closely-contested of the day, with the Cowdray pair of Roy Penrose and Richard Histed prevailing by one up to give their team an unlikely 4-3 victory, their third win in a week.
