FUTURE IS LOOKING GOOD FOR STUD'S STAR

WEST Sussex showjumper Alex Hempleman is enjoying a highly successful season that has led to him tackling the World Breeding finals in Belgium and the Horse of the Year seven-year-old showjumping championship this month.

Alex (23) is based at Rocks Farm Stud, near Coolham, where his two main horses this season have been seven-year-old Laurencetown Lad, known affectionately at home as Henry, and five-year-old mare Ashkari, known as India.

Laurencetown Lad has been progressing well, having qualified for the six-year-old final last year at Birmingham and following up this year with some sound performances. He was second in the Grade C Class at the South of England Show, sponsored by Russell Stevenson jewellers of Haywards Heath, and qualified for the Horse of the Year Show at Addington.

Ashkari, owned by Nancy Pinchen of Rusper, has developed into a very talented competition horse and has done well in her own right.

She qualified for the Breeding Championships in Belgium at Addington, being one of only five selected from 200 of her age group to go forward to the prestigious final.

She has a bright future ahead and will be aimed for the six-year-old finals in 2008.

Laurencetown Lad will be in a different league next year, competing in foxhunter events.

Alex rides competition horses for owners, and considers himself lucky to ride for international showjumper Duncan Inglis and produces a lot of his young horses.

"He has a really nice filly, Miracles, who is four now and should go on to be an outstanding competition horse. I do a lot of training with Duncan, which gives me valuable experience," said Alex.
