Storrington knock near neighbours Steyning out of the cup

The visiting Swans had to come from a goal down and were helped by a penalty and sending off of a Steyning player as they ran out 3-1 winners.

Storrington played the counter-attacking game to good effect in the first-half, as although the hosts had more possession they struggled to find space to create many chances, and former Swans keeper Jason Downer, on his debut, made some good stops against his old club.

Steyning did take the lead in the 40th minute, Mo Shug’aa’s wicked cross forced an own goal.

The key moment arrived in the 60th minute when Ash Finch was shown a red card for handball in the box and Joe Warner tucked away the resulting penalty, and a brace from Marcus Robertshaw thereafter saw the Swans through to Round 2.

Steyning manager John Suter had few complaints about the result but did feel the second half penalty was crucial.

He said: “We controlled the first half but they have quick players and caused us problems on the break, our goalkeeper Jason Downer made some good saves on his debut.

“They came out for the second half strongly and getting a penalty and us having a man sent off didn’t help. It changed the game and was debatable but we didn’t complain at the time and I won’t complain now.”

Steyning continue to look strong in the league just a point off the top and Suter added: “The league is our priority but I like the RUR Cup and wanted to do well, I put out a side to win the game so I’m disappointed we didn’t.”
