Crawley Town 0, Exeter City 0: A fan's view

Exeter City's play-off dream is still alive after an impressive performance at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

But as much as Exeter impressed, Crawley Town disappointed.

Mark Yates’ team, who are missing Matt Harrold and started the match with Gwion Edwards on the bench, needed to up their game as their strike force wasn’t as strong as usual.

Exeter’s Jake Taylor scored his second goal in three games. He whipped the ball into the bottom right corner after he was found by Ollie Watkins.

Austrian keeper Bobby Olejnik denied both captain Sonny Bradley and Shamir Fenelon. Home fans now sensed a goal was definitely coming but the home team struggled to get the ball past the opposition’s defence.

As the last quarter of the game approached, Exeter’s Watkins secured their win with a header from very close range that hit the back of the net. Watkins, 20, has now scored four goals in six games and has really impressed manager Paul Tisdale since joining the first team.

After the away side’s superior performance, they left home fans in misery as they walked away with their heads down low.

Exeter moved to 11th place after the win, where they are now five points off the play offs. Crawley Town remain 16th and are relatively safe from relegation.

Mark Yates’ men travel to Bristol Rovers on Saturday who are currently in a play-off position. Meanwhile, Exeter City host Plymouth who are currently in a promotion spot.
