Reds went behind three minutes into the second half through a penalty conceded by Lanre Oyebanjo which was put away by Ricky Holmes.

They went 2-0 behind ten minutes before full-time through John-Joe O’Toole, before Gwion Edwards pulled one back from a free-kick with six minutes to go.

Yates said: “I am never happy after a defeat. It was a tough game; they have proved they are the best team in the league by some distance.

“But we pressed the self-destruct button just after half-time.

“We didn’t keep our concentration levels going properly.”

Yates praised the Cobblers boss for the job he has done given time and good financial backing.

He said: “Chris Wilder has done really well over two years there. With some good investment he’s really been supported well.”
