Flying Fernandez pockets another title

The Bexhill-based potter followed up his victory in the Pontin’s Spring Festival and English Amateur Championship at the start of the month by triumphing in the Castle Snooker Club Charity Classic Pro-Am.

Fernandez won six matches in total, three on Saturday and three on Sunday. He remarkably restricted his first round opponent to just two points in their four frames, knocking in a pair of 70 breaks and three 40s to boot.

His closest match came in the quarter-finals where he came from 3-2 down to edge out Zack Richardson 4-3. Fernandez then saw off Billy Castle 4-1 in the semi-finals after winning the last three frames fairly comfortably.

He then went 2-0 down against former Pontin’s International Open Series player Andy Rogers, from Wales, in the final before reeling off five in a row to win 5-2, knocking in a tournament best 122 break as well.

In fact, it was nearly an all-O’Sullivan’s Snooker Club final because Jimmy Robertson lost 4-3 to Rogers in the other semi-final. Being a professional, Robertson had to give away 18 points per frame to his opponent.

Robertson knocked out the other professional in the field, Alfie Burden, 4-3 in the quarter-finals. World no.53 Robertson began one of the frames against last year’s winner by potting 11 reds and 11 blacks.
