FINDON GO WITH BIG 'UN IN LAST 32

AN RAF assignment in Canada takes all-rounder and opening bowler James Iago out of Findon's mix for the clash between the champions of Sussex and Hampshire at Long Furlong on Sunday.

Iago's deputy will be 6ft 5in Steve Waller, who will share the opening attack but whose batting, while maybe more explosive and predictable, cannot replace Iago's strength in the middle order.

Steve Waller, nicknamed Big 'Un, loftily maintains a six-pronged Findon bowling attack, though, for a game the shape of which skipper Nigel Waller is half-expecting.

He said: "Paultons have been successful so far this season batting second. We like to set, so it looks quite interesting. I think it will be a very tough game. Paultons have beaten Easton & Martyr Worthy, whom we beat last season at this stage. They were among the best teams we met.

"James Iago is a quality bowler and batsman but we got through rounds last year without Toby Kingsbury and Paul O'Sullivan, so we've just got to get on with it."

Local cricket fans have their last chance in this year's competition to watch and support Findon at home. The winners will be away from now on, the next tie being in the last 16 at either Bledlow Ridge (Buckingham-shire, 80 miles distant) or Swardeston (Norfolk, 175 miles) on July 11.

Paultons are from the Totton side of Southampton. In the previous two rounds, they defeated Easton (166) by one wicket off the last ball, getting the three runs wanted, and Michelmersh & Timsbury (194-6) by six wickets.

FINDON'S 12: N.Waller, Kingsbury, G.Waller, S.Waller, Rogers, O'Sullivan, Cox, Gifford, Stewart, Smith, M.Higgins, Vickerstaff.

Defending champions, Findon lead the Invitation League for the first time this season after dismissing struggling Burgess Hill (121) off the penultimate delivery of their away game to win by 80 runs.

Findon (201-3) required six wickets from the final eight overs, then four off the last six when Nigel Waller brought back opening bowlers James Iago and Rob Fry. They took three and Waller himself got an lbw with the last over running out.
