Rye moved up to sixth in Sussex Cricket League Division Four after winning by six runs away to bottom club Lewes Priory.

The first XI is full of young vibrant talent, but the impetuosity of youth means the opposition is always in with a chance, which was proven on Saturday as Rye won with only two overs left.

Rye skipper Gary Willis lost his 12th toss in a row, but Lewes’s decision to field backfired as Rye reached 102-1 thanks to Dan Seabrook (58) and Neil Browne (37). The story of the season was repeated, however, as Rye failed to capitalise on the start.

James Hamilton (22) and Will Wheeler (27) contributed, but the rest of the batting crumbled. It’s not only the lack of runs causing Rye an issue, it’s also the lack of time at the crease as they were all out in just 39.5 overs, giving Lewes 60 overs to bat.

Rye’s strength lies in their bowling and Craig Pierce shouldered the burden, bowling 17 overs and taking 3-57, supported by Tommy Nunn (3-25). Rye had Lewes rocking at 65-5, but then the game swung as Sam de Belder compiled 48 not out in a measured fashion.

At 159-7, it seemed Lewes’s game, but a revitalised Willis (3-37), supported by Jackson Woodcock (1-4), turned the match around as Lewes were dismissed for 171, securing a maximum 30 points for Rye.
