Only way is up for Bexhill

Currently seventh in the 10-team Division Two, the Polegrove-based side is focusing on moving into the top half as opposed to staying out of the two relegation spots.

First team manager Hamish Russell said: “We’re trying to win games to take us up the table not to stay away from the bottom. I’ve not seen a side yet that have really impressed me or blown us away.”

Bexhill are 27 points ahead of second-bottom Ifield after the first eight of 18 matches and 13 back of fifth-placed Glynde & Beddingham, albeit having played a game more than the latter.

Next up tomorrow (Saturday) is a first ever league meeting with Goring By Sea. One place and 11 points above Bexhill, Goring have done pretty well since earning promotion from Division Three (West) last summer.

“We don’t know anything about them and we’ve not got much of a gameplan for them,” continued Russell. “We’ll just take it as it comes and we’re just concentrating on our strengths.

“I would think they’ve probably got two or three handy cricketers in there, but so have we and if we want to start moving up the table, one of the targeted games to win will be the team that’s come up the year before.”

Bexhill may well be unchanged from the abandoned fixture away to St James’s Montefiore last weekend, although they were waiting to hear on the availability of Callum Guest. Play will get underway from 1pm at The Polegrove.

Chris Topp’s side will be back in action on Sunday when it makes the short journey to Premier Division club Eastbourne in the Gray-Nicolls Sussex T20 Cup. That match will start at 4pm.
