Horsham Cricket Club sign World Cup cult hero Dwayne Leverock’s nephew

Fast bowler Stuart Whittingham has also joined from neighbours Roffey, while batsman Sunny Bhatt completes a trio of new arrivals.

Dwayne Leverock, nicknamed “Sluggo”, shot to fame as one of the stories of the 2007 World Cup, where at 20 stone he became the largest cricketer to take to the field in the competition’s history. He memorably claimed the wickets of legends Kumar Sangakkara and Yuvraj Singh, though it was his brilliant one-handed diving slip catch to dismiss Robin Uthappa followed by his trademark jig which made him national hero in his home country.

Horsham will be hoping his 18 year old nephew Kamau can provide similar fireworks in the Sussex Premier League. The left arm medium/fast bowler holds a British passport and is a Bermudan Under-19 international who has turned out for the senior side in ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers.

He comes recommended by former Horsham player Phil Hudson at the ICC and Horsham skipper Craig Gallagher said: “He’s got decent pace and we’re hoping we’ve unearthed something of a rough diamond.”

Former Sussex Academy seamer Whittingham will be looking to get back on track after a tough 2012 and Gallagher said: “He’s a quality opening bowler who approached us to join. He goes to Loughborough Uni with Dev (Endersby) so that probably helped sway him, and with those two and Ben Shoare we should have a strong bowling attack this year.” Spinners Michael Munday and Will Beer will again add good variety.

Bhatt is something of an unknown quantity, but played in the Derbyshire Premier League last year. And having been the bridesmaids in the title race for the last three seasons Gallagher added: “Winning the league is the aim this year and I believe I now have the squad to do that and perform well in the cups as well.”
