Bexhill out to upset title hopefuls

Although Bexhill’s cricketers can no longer win the Sussex Premier League, they will be attempting to throw a spanner in the works of a team which can.

Bexhill will take on second-placed East Grinstead in their final home game of the campaign tomorrow (Saturday). Play is due to get under way from 11.30am at The Polegrove.

“They’re coming off a fantastic run, they’re knocking everyone over at the minute,” said Bexhill first team coach Ian Cox. “They will be favourites, but I’m not sure they’ve won at Bexhill that often and we’re going in trying to win the game.”

Grinstead, who trail leaders Roffey by four points with two games to go, have won their last six matches and eight of their last nine. In fact, their last defeat was in the reverse fixture against Bexhill towards the end of June.

“We will be very positive,” continued Cox, who expects the wicket to have a green tinge to it following this week’s rain. “All the pressure’s on them - they’ve got to win the game. We’ve got nothing to lose.”

Bexhill, who won away to Cuckfield last weekend, need 40 points from their last two contests to secure what would be an excellent top four finish and one more victory would take their win tally for the season into double figures.

“We’re getting more knowledgeable about the game,” added Cox, whose team has yet to draw all term. “We’re just understanding the game and reacting to the situation really well, what’s going on in the game and what we’ve got to do to manage that.”

Callum Guest and Luke Youngs are expected to return for a Bexhill side which will conclude its summer with a local derby away to relegation-threatened Eastbourne next weekend.
