CRICKET: Weekly round-up (June 25)

SPINNER Rakesh Parmar grabbed six wickets on Saturday in Arundel Cricket Club's 26-run win over Slinfold which lifted them up a place to eighth in the Sussex League Division 3 West table.

After Arundel had scored 195-8 from their 53 overs, they had Slinfold on the back foot right from the off and reduced them to 8-2. Jon Augustus added some resistance, but when he was the fifth man out with the score on 139, Arundel quickly went through the rest of Slinfold's batsmen to dismiss them for 169.

Arundel captain Richard James said: "When we bowled, I opened with two spinners. Seamers had been easier to play when we batted so I wanted Slinfold to have to force their shots rather than use any pace on the ball.

"Rakesh Parmar (6-62) and Neil Chitty (1-28) bowled well in tandem and although Neil only got the one wicket, he kept one end under control to build pressure.

"If it hadn't have been for Jon Augustus scoring 80 in his usual sublime manner, they would have struggled to accrue 100."

Ian Dabinett-Jays also did well with the ball and took 3-17 from five overs.

Arundel had lost Ryan Chitty (two) early on but a fairly even contribution throughout the order from then on with the bat saw them finish with 195-8.

Bradley James led the scores with 36, while Ally James scored 29 and Dabinett-Jays made 22 not out.

Captain Richard James said: "I'm very pleased with the win.

"I won the toss, decided to bat and Bradley and Rohan batted well to add 40 odd.

"After Rohan got out, it became clear it was a case of crease occupation on a wicket that offered assistance to the bowlers.

"Pretty much everyone chipped in. However, it was the eighth wicket partnership of 46 between Ian Dabinett-Jays and Neil Chitty that really turned the game our way and proved invaluable."

Rustington's poor display in the field with a number of dropped catches allowed opponents Belgrave Adelaide to stack up 224-4 in 40 overs in their West Sussex Invitation League Division 3 match.

Adam Taylor led Rustington's figures with 3-42 from 10 overs, while Grant Melvin grabbed the other wicket.

Rustington aimed to play conservatively to last the large number of overs remaining but started poorly and lost captain Martyn Payne for a duck.

However, fellow opener Alex Fitch made 52 and put on 58 for the second-wicket with Simon Gosden, who struck 33.
