Comeback dashes Common cup hopes

LITTLE Common have scored a few late goals since the turn of the year, but on Tuesday night it was their turn to concede them.

The Commoners, who have netted in stoppage time on three occasions during 2007, let in three during the final quarter-of-an-hour this time around to lose 3-2 away to Hastings United reserves.

Joint manager Mark Linch said: "I don't think I've ever seen a group of players so gutted at the end of the game. In all my years of playing and managing I've never been involved in a match like it."

Sussex Division Three side Common appeared on course for a Hastings & District FA Intermediate Cup semi-final showdown with local rivals Bexhill United.

Volleys from Dan Collins and Jared Lusted (following an Andy Matthews cross) put them two-up inside the opening 20 minutes and it might well have been more before the break.

But Hastings, who play in Sussex Reserve Section Premier, began the fightback when former Sidley United and Bexhill player Billy Trickett struck from 20 yards. Dominic Cruttenden levelled three minutes later and won it with a splendid free kick six minutes from time.
