Baker: I felt we were dead and buried in our chase

Southwater captain Nick Baker feared his side were '˜dead and buried' as they slumped to 107-6 at Seaford on Saturday.

That was in reply to the home side’s total of 185, but a brave showing from Southwater’s final three batsmen after Johann Brouwer fell for 64 saw them home with a wicket in hand.

They finished the day with 188-9 in 49.3 overs and in doing so clinched maximum points to lead the Division 4 table.

Seaford were inserted after losing the toss and a fine showing from Paul Osborne (6-20) saw them lose wickets at regular intervals. Chris Stanyard hit 35, Oliver Smith made 50 and Thomas Date scored 37, as only Adam Kneller (11) also made double figures.

In reply, Alex Harding opened up with 25, while Brouwer hit a stand-out 64 after coming in at number three. With wickets falling around him, he was finally out with the score on 147-8 and Dan Skett (21*), Harrison Webb (14) and James Skett (five*) played crucial roles in seeing them home.

Baker said: “To be honest, I thought we were dead and buried at 107-6. I thought the game was over, but we managed to snatch victory in the end. It is massive credit to last few batsman and Johann as well. Paul bowled really well and Dan Skett did as well, but did not get the rewards.

“Johann batted all the way through after the first wicket and looked like the Johann of old again in good form.

“Not losing that wicket earnt us 17 points and they could be ones we look back on at the end of the year. In the past in games like that we have not got over the line, so it was pleasing to do that.”

Leaders Southwater host second-placed Rottingdean on Saturday, Baker added: “If we can get the result at home, we will have a bit of a gap over the chasing pack. Not a massive one but a gap at least.

“It’s nice to be top of the table for once, we have always been playing catch-up in the past.”
