Young offenders paying back the community

YOUNG offenders have been redeeming themselves with the help of Arun District Council.

More than 30 youngsters have been involved in a project to look after church yards and cemeteries across the district. Their tasks have included litter picking and ground maintenance.

The team worked with St Nicholas Church in Arundel, where they trimmed overgrown shrubs, and have an on-going project in Littlehampton Cemetery.

At Littlehampton they are removing overgrown shrubs from around the old chapel.

The sessions have been organised by Arun District Council's cemetery supervisor Guy Hunter and the Youth Offending Service's reparations co-orinator Paul Wood.

Guy said: "It's good for people within the area to see that young people are out there putting back into the community."

The aim of the project is to allow young people to give something positive to the community, in order to help repair the harm done by their offence.
