Worthing's top 10 most-read stories in May

LOCAL government elections, the controversy of Denton Gardens and a mother sending her two sons to jail, are among the most-read stories on the Worthing Herald's website for May.

1. Candidate arrested at Worthing election count

Dawn Smith, who was standing for the Stop Durrington's Overdevelopment '“Save Titnore's Trees party, Worthing's Northbrook ward, was arrested for disorderly behaviour after a row at the Assembly Hall.

This was the month's most-read story, and the second most read were the actual election results.

2. Herald reader's pictures of overturned car and trapped seagull in Worthing

Herald reader Michelle Johnston captured two amazing pictures on her mobile phone in as many days.

She arrived home from work to find an over-turned car in front of her house, and the next day saw firefighters rescue a seagull tangled up on the roof of Montague Street shop Monsoon.

3. VOTE: Fury over Worthing bird table

Herald readers shared bird-lovers anger after Worthing Council said it planned to remove a bird table from Denton Gardens, placed their by Warwick Road residents.

4. VIDEO: Worthing hospital consultant speaks about the future as MP thrown out of press conference

Worthing MP Peter Bottomley was thrown out of the press conference when West Sussex Primary Care Trust announced it would be keeping a level of A&E services at all three of its hospitals.

5. VOTE: Mother sent two sons to jail

The Herald and sister newspaper the Littlehampton Gazette had an exclusive interview with Carol Saldinack, a mother of two who informed the police about her sons involvement in a vicious assault, on May 22.

Mrs Saldinack received overwhelming support in our readers' poll, and on Friday, May 30, told her story to GMTV and in the national press.

Already a well-read story, once Mrs Saldinack's tale hit the national headlines another wave of visitors came to the Herald site, many added their own supportive comments.
