Those who attended last Saturdaywere told by Annabell Alexander, on behalf of the Arun international women's day group, how women had marched through New York 100 years ago seeking better status.

'Changes are beginning to take place, especially in the western world, though we all have a long way to go to ensure our feminine voice is heard and makes a difference,' she said.

The day at the Laburnum Centre in Lyon Street was a powerful demonstration of the wide range of talents and skills that local women possess.

There was story telling with Marielle, international folk dancing by Janet Douglas and sacred Indian chanting with the Chandra Chanters.

Akemi Solloway, from a samurai family, gave fascinating insights into Japanese culture and how to wear a kimono.

The African young people's group brought their continent to life with a dance workshop.

Meanwhile, taster sessions of therapies such as allergy testing to hypnotherapy allowed them to be tried.

Jewellery making, scrapbooking and traditional spinning and weaving provided plenty of other activities.

Summing up the day, organising group member Cleo Matthews stated: 'It was a wonderful day with women from many nations, cultures and religions coming together as sisters to enjoy a day of celebration and learning together.'
