Wind turbine could soon be enhancing school lessons in Bognor

A Bognor Regis school is set to be the first in the town to be powered by the wind.

A 15m-high wind turbine is proposed for Laburnum Grove Junior School.

Its three rotor blades would produce six kilowatts of carbon-free electricity at 200rpm.

Plans for the turbine at the Laburnum Grove site have been published by West Sussex County Council.

They were enthusiastically backed by Bognor Regis town councillors at their planning and licensing committee on Tuesday.

Led by chairman Stephen Kerrigan, they said: "The committee absolutely supports this initiative 100 per cent. This sets a fine example to us all.

"We feel it will help schoolchildren understand the need to conserve energy. It is regrettable similar facilities are not available to local residents."

The turbine is a Proven Energy WT6000 model.

The same turbine has been installed at St Mary's School in Climping.

It will have a grey steel tower and black blades made from a glass thermoplastic composite material.

Figures from Proven Energy state the maximum noise from the turbine is 60 decibels at a wind speed of 20 metres a second.
