Winchelsea Literary Society is meeting this evening (Friday) to hear a talk by the Irish novelist and poet Monica Tracey. Monica wrote, Unweaving the Thread which concerns the trials and blessings of her childhood in Ireland and Left of the Moon, her most recent novel. The event begins at 7 for 7.30 pm in the Lower Court Hall.

A second event this evening is the Blackfriars Cellar Tour and Wine Tasting arranged by the National Trust at 7 pm. Blackfriars Barn which is a site of historical interest is located on Rectory Lane near the New Hall. The cost is £5 (contact 01580 831331).

Don’t forget that Winchelsea Garden Society has organised a Coffee Morning plus Rose and Sweet Pea Show tomorrow (Saturday) from 10.30 am in the Court Hall. Exhibits must be in by 11am when the judging starts and the presentation of the cups will be at noon. The Roy Horobin Cup will be presented for the best vase of roses of any variety and the Ryan Challenge Cup for the best vase of sweet peas in mixed colours (vases are not to exceed 15 cms in diameter). Entry is free and this year there will be a Plant Swap; so if you have any plants you would like to exchange for something different bring them along and see what others have brought in.

There will be a Cellar Tour tomorrow at 2 pm starting in Castle Street. The tour lasts 90 minutes and costs £5 per person with funds going towards archaeology in Winchelsea. Tickets are booked through WAS and the contact number is 01797 225333; please ensure that you are wearing sensible shoes.

On Friday 22nd June St Thomas’s Primary School will be holding its annual Summer Fair when the school day ends at 3.15 pm. Included in the list of activities and refreshments are the use of the swimming pool, a plant stall, tombola, plenty of sausages from the barbecue, a glass of Pimms and a variety of homemade cakes with cups of tea. There is opportunity to throw sponges and Dads in the stocks and the raffle offers a range of prizes, the top one being a large sum of cash. Friends and families are always welcome at these events.

Icklesham Parish Council met on Monday 11th June in the New Hall an item on the agenda concerned the road surface at the A259 in Winchelsea. Cllr Comotto drew attention to the fact that the Highways Agency (HA) had laid a new silent road surface on Rectory Lane between the junctions with Back Lane and Hiham Gardens which worked very well. He suggested that the council should be involved in getting this extended in front of the New Hall as it would make a huge difference to the users of the hall, including the Council. In addition he requested that the Council lobby ESCC to resurface the C298 through the centre of Winchelsea with the same material. The buildings along High Street and German Street front onto the road and a silent surface would be a major improvement and so IPC has been asked to decide upon the action it wishes to take. The next Council meeting is on Monday 9th July at 7.15 pm in Icklesham’s Memorial Hall.
