Church Market: Everybody is invited to the Saturday Church Market taking place tomorrow October 1st, from 10.30am till 12 noon. It's always a good opportunity for a friendly chat over coffee, tea and biscuits in this magnificent building now decorated with the fruits of harvest. The funds raised will go towards church funds and last month's Market raised the helpful sum of £328.30. As usual there will be a good selection of home-made produce for sale as well as flourishing plants and hardback books.

Harvest Service: St Thomas’ Church holds its Harvest Thanksgiving Communion Service this Sunday October 2nd at 11am with the Rector. Everyone is invited to bring in one food or toiletry item which will be given to the charities which the church supports. These are Family Support Work (FSW) and Rye Food Bank and both organisations really appreciate the generous help provided which makes a difference to people’s lives. All contributions can be left in the box and basket at the back of the church on any Sunday or placed in the Churchwardens pew ready for collection.

Winchelsea Arts Concert: The women’s group Block4 Recorder Quartet will be performing at St Thomas’ Church on Friday October 7th at 7.30pm. Tickets are £13 or £6.50 under 18s, purchased at the door or online at www.winchelsea-arts.org.uk . BLOCK4 is a London based recorder quartet, featuring Emily Bannister, Lucy Carr, Katie Cowling and Rosie Land. They present a dynamic approach to contemporary consort music as well as offering a captivating interpretation of music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The quartet’s innovative style has resulted in them being the 2014 winners of the Royal Overseas League Ensemble competition, the first recorder consort to receive this accolade in the competition’s 62-year history. BLOCK4’s performances have included concerts at prestigious venues including the National Gallery, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, the Wigmore Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the Greenwich International Early Music Festival.

Garden Society bowls: The Society will be running a stall at the New Hall ‘Festive Gift Fair’ on 12th November to raise funds for both the Garden Society and the New Hall refurbishment. The major sale item will be bowls of hyacinths and daffodils for Christmas gifts and 500 bulbs are currently being planted to flower in time for Christmas. This means a good number of bowls or pots with or without drainage are needed and especially hyacinth bowls. If you can spare any suitable containers please let Howard Norton know (01797 226524) and he will arrange to collect them. Also thank you to all for the bowls and containers so far received and much planting has already been done but another 20 or 30 are needed to complete the job.

Harvest Praise: St Richard’s Church congregation will be ploughing the fields and scattering the good seed on the land when (as is likely) they sing the great hymn of praise to celebrate another year of harvest. In 1782 the German poet Matthias Claudius wrote that hymn, ‘We Plough the Fields and Scatter’ which is based on Psalm 144. The third verse of of the Psalm begins: ‘What is man that thou takest knowledge of him!’ And as the hymn concludes: God gives because he cares, and in return desires our humble thankful hearts. The evening prayer and Harvest Thanksgiving service begins at 3.30pm on Sunday October 2nd, to be followed by light refreshments and all are very welcome to attend.

Martial Arts: Sensei Sean Kinsella, 5th Dan, has been holding Martial Arts classes at the Community Hall for over ten years and in that time has trained many local young people in the art of self-defense. His classes are held on Tuesdays starting at 5.30pm for Children’s Karate ages 4-11 years; at 6.30pm Youth\Adult Karate sessions for 12+ years then from 7.30pm American Kickboxing which encompasses karate skills for 13+ years. There is always space for new members to come along and take advantage of the free 2-week trial period.
