Wesley snacks on a sock

EATING socks may not be everyone's idea of a snack but Wesley, a two-year-old Welsh springer spaniel, obviously has unusual tastes.

He's obsessed with them!

Jane Symonds, Wesley's owner, from Iford, near Lewes, said: 'He has always had a fascination with socks. He is also very clever.

'Having found a way of opening the lid of our laundry basket. he helped himself to some socks!'

Wesley was brought into Rachel Perry, veterinary surgeon at Pet Doctors Lewes, after eating two socks.

Unfortunately one had passed into his intestine, creating a blockage.

It was obvious that the blockage was serious and an operation was needed to remove the offending sock to avoid any further damage.

Although feeling a bit sore, Wesley is now making a full recovery.

'Unfortunately many pets are very inquisitive and often if they see something that they think might be remotely edible, they'll have a go at eating it,' said Rachel.

'We recommend that pet owners are wary of leaving objects lying around the house which may be a temptation to a pet.

'In this case Wesley was lucky but there have been cases of pets swallowing dangerously sharp objects or getting things stuck in their throats, and either can be fatal.'

Added Jane: 'We've now got to find a laundry basket with a secure lid to ensure that Wesley is never again tempted by a tasty sock.'

And the offending sock? Jane's keeping it in a secure place of course!
