Volunteers receive awards for service

Achievement awards have been presented to four volunteers who have played a key role in the success of a Bognor Regis drop-in centre.

Tracey Swire, Carl Doyle, Amy Bilby and Jeremy Noble received their awards at a ceremony held by the West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) in Horsham.

The centre helps people who are affected by a relative or friend's misuse of alcohol or drugs.

It is at The Hub Community Centre, which is on the corner of Queensway and Canada Grove, and is open between 1pm and 2.30pm on Thursdays.

MP Francis Maude made the presentations.

Tracey said: 'At The Hub Community Centre, we offer a safe place where people receive '“ in total confidence '“ free information and support.

'The four of us have all received comprehensive and accredited training from the DAAT. This includes drug and alcohol awareness, child protection, plus counselling skills.'

Jane Brown, of the Families and Friends Project, added: 'They are taught to actively listen to people in a non- judgemental way and look at the options open to them.

'And because they live near the drop-in centre, they are local people helping other local people.'

Sam Tearle, of DAAT, said: 'We are incredibly proud of what you have achieved and people are now receiving a very valuable service.'

West Sussex County Council cabinet member for adult services Pat Arculus said: 'You are doing a marvellous job and this is another good example of the county council working in partnership with district and boroughs.'
