DIGGING UP THE PAST: Even if you haven't yet bought tickets for Sue Lee's talk on archaeology tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon in the Hall, please do come along to what is sure to be an informative and entertaining event. It starts at 3pm, and the cost of £7.50 includes tea, and cakes baked by the Friends of St Mary's, who look forward to welcoming lots of you there.

HARVEST FESTIVAL: This year’s harvest will be celebrated in St Mary’s Church at 9.30am on Sunday, always a happy occasion. Any harvest offerings (in any form) you may wish to bring with you will be distributed later to people who will particularly appreciate them.

‘FLU JABS: For patients at the Broad Oak Surgery, the first of only two ‘flu vaccination sessions this autumn will take place at the surgery on Wednesday (October 5), between 2pm and 3pm. No need for an appointment, just turn up. As the second session isn’t till November 16, it would be a good idea to go along to this one if you can.

HARVEST SUPPER: Also to celebrate this year’s harvest, the annual supper will take place in the Hall next Friday evening, October 7, 6.30pm for 7pm. For £10 you’ll be able to enjoy a first-rate two-course home-cooked supper, and (of course) good company. This year there won’t be tickets, payment at the door instead. To help plan the catering, if you’re intending to come please ring either Fr Martin (01424 883408, or 07760 197954) or Liz Turgoose (01424 882657) as soon as possible.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING: In the Hall between 10am and noon next day (Saturday, October 8). Please support our big annual fundraiser for an excellent cause! You can do this by looking in, and if possible BRINGING any of the following with you: home-grown plants, bulbs, seeds and produce, home-made cakes, jams, preserves etc, hand-made cards, prizes for the raffle and of course BUYING lots of the lovely things other people have brought, and raffle tickets too.

Even if you have something else on and can’t be there, please send a donation to Oakshaw, Udimore, TN31 6BG (cheques to be made out to Macmillan Cancer Support).

PARISH COUNCIL: Two important matters were brought up at last week’s meeting of the Council.

1) Under certain fairly common traffic conditions, the sharp bend on B2089 25m or so to the West of The Plough can present a serious hazard. When a driver has to wait before turning right into the Plough car park because of vehicles approaching from the Rye direction, a tailback of other eastbound vehicles can quickly form, reaching back almost as far as the sharp bend. Any other driver approaching the sharp bend at the permitted speed of 40mph wouldn’t be able to see the rear vehicle of the tailback soon enough to avoid crashing into it. All readers of this column , please note: always approach this sharp bend from the West with extreme caution! Meanwhile the Chairman is to discuss with the Highways Steward how all drivers can be warned as they approach this very dangerous hazard.

2) Following representations to the Boundary Commission by the Parish Council and others, it’s to be hoped that Udimore’s proposed linking with North Rother (instead of Brede Valley) for elections to the County Council will be withdrawn (leaving us linked with Brede as at present). The final decision on this is expected soon, and will be implemented in the local election next May. Watch this space!
