Hugh Dennis, who lives near Chichester, will be leading a band of other runners taking to the streets of Portsmouth in a bid to raise money for the charity on October 25.

Known for his roles in BBC1’s Outnumbered and BBC2’s Mock of the Week, Hugh will be among 30,000 people taking part in four events in Portsmouth over the weekend.

Hugh first took part in the run in 2009 and has been back nearly every year.

“The Morrisons Great South Run is a great course with a fantastic atmosphere and I am delighted to return to raise money for this deserving cause,” he said.

“It is estimated that 850,000 people in the UK live with dementia – a condition that not only affects individuals but their friends and families too.

“Alzheimer’s Society carries out important work in helping people with dementia and their loved ones, and in raising awareness of the disease so that people have a greater understanding of its effects and of the support that is available.”

Starting and finishing on Clarence Esplanade, in Southsea, the ten-mile run will go through Old Portsmouth before entering the historic dockyard and along the seafront.

Natalie Bettinson, Alzheimer’s Society community fundraiser for Hampshire and the Islands, said: “It’s great that Hugh is giving his time to support Alzheimer’s Society. There are 2,247 people living with dementia in Portsmouth and it can happen to anyone. With the right support people can live well with dementia.

“Hugh has shown an amazing amount of dedication to take on the run again, and we can never thank him enough. As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like Hugh to help us continue our vital work so that Alzheimer’s Society can continue leading the fight against dementia.”
