Teen arrested over Littlehampton early hours arson attack

A LITTLEHAMPTON teenager has been arrested in connection with an arson attack on the home of a four-year-old girl.

Fire crews were called to Westway, Littlehampton, at about 3am on Saturday (May 23), after a neighbour reported a blaze at the home of a 24-year-old woman, and her young daughter.

Sgt Peter Allan, of Littlehampton police, said: "Emergency services were confronted with a UPVC front door that was alight and a lot of smoke inside the property. The seat of the fire was in the area of the front door, and it had caused the glass to explode."

After bringing the fire under control, it was found that no one was home, and forensic investigators established the cause to be arson.

A 19-year-old man was later arrested, and has been bailed pending further injuries.

Sgt Allan added: "I am grateful, that thanks to the prompt actions of members of the community and the emergency services, this fire was contained before it was able to take hold. Although there is extensive damage to the property, no-one was hurt.

"It is believed that the person responsible for this fire may have singeing to clothing or burn type injuries to the area of their hands and/or face."
