Southwater brothers use computer game to fundraise for family support charity

Two brothers from Southwater have recently have raised hundreds of pounds for charity using the game Minecraft.

Nathan and Connor Turner took on the charity fundraising project as part of their home education organised by their Mum, Paula.

The boys chose to support local family support charity Home-Start Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex (CHAMS).

For every person who sign up to play their game, they asked for a donation and raised £350 towards the specialised training of volunteers.

Paula said: “They liked the idea of a charity that supported local struggling families by sending a volunteer into the home.”

Last year Home-Start CHAMS supported 327 children, with their team of trained home visiting volunteers.

The charity’s fundraising manager Jacquie Thomas said: “We are passionate about our work and the unique support our volunteers give to local families.

“Demand for our services is growing. We have been grateful for support from the Big Lottery Fund over the last 2 years, but as this comes to an end, backing from our local community is vital.

“The amount that Nathan and Connor have raised will pay for three new volunteers to be fully trained, so they can help us reach even more families and children.”

During a visit to Home-Start, the boys were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for all their hard work and met with volunteers who had recently finished their training and started working with families.

Nathan said: “It was great to meet the volunteers and to see first hand how the money we raised is used.

“We are so grateful to the boys and their Mum for supporting us”, added Jacquie Thomas, “and to everyone who helped them with their fundraising.

“We would love to hear from other people interested in helping support us in similar ways. It makes a real difference in our work with local families.”
