Sculptures at Rustington school

A PROJECT of life-size proportions has helped a Rustington primary school achieve the heights of artistic praise.

Pupils at Georgian Gardens, in Guildford Road, have been working with Littlehampton Welding since Easter to create two sculptures, featuring steel cut-outs of staff and students.

Deirdre Carolin, leader of arts at the school, said all the students involved had done so in their own time, during weekend workshops, and that they had designed the pieces as a joint effort.

"It is something that many children would not usually experience until they are in art school," she said.

"And it has been great working with Littlehampton Welding '“ they have been fantastic, it is really nice to be able to forge these links with businesses in the community."

She added that the pieces had arrived in the same week that the school was presented with the Arts Council Gold Arts Mark for the third time in a row, a run that was very rare.

"It's great because it helps to raise the profile of arts within the school, and in turn raise the profile of the school in the community," she said.

Neil Fry from Littlehampton Welding added that he had loved working with the children on the project.

"It is fun to get more involved with the kids.

"It was really nice showing them around the factory, it's a great big, noisy, filthy place, and I really enjoyed watching their reactions to it, and seeing them get excited about it.

"Maybe we even planted a few seeds in their heads about what to do when they are older."

The sculptures were designed to reflect different aspects of school life and feature students reading, playing guitar and playing football.
