Scouts's success in Downs challenge

SCOUTS from Uckfield navigated their way across the South Downs in a two-day hike and overnight camping challenge at the weekend.

They were taking part in a competition organised for Scouts and Explorers across East and West Sussex.

In all there were 57 teams of four with eight of them coming from the Ashdown district which includes Uckfield but also covers Crowborough, Ticehurst, Hartfield and Mayfield.

One of the Uckfield teams, the 4th Uckfield Alpha (pictured) completed the challenge in second place.

They hiked 15 miles on the first day and ten the second having put up their own tents cooked their own meals, read their own maps and carried all their kit, an average weight of ten kilograms, on their backs.
