Scouts, Cubs and Guides parade through Bognor Regis

A thunderstorm provided a dramatic end to an annual Scouts parade through Bognor Regis.

The violent weather occurred just as the 150 to 160 Scouts, Cubs, Brownies and Guides returned from the St George's Day service on Sunday, April 20.

Vicky Hennessy, the Scouts' district commissioner for Bognor, said: "It was the quickest dismiss of a parade I've ever carried out.

"The storm began just as the parade was getting back from the church. It was a nuisance because we all got soaked."

The number taking part in the yearly procession through the town centre was less than in recent parades.

Mrs Hennessy said the event suffered because it coincided with a major rugby tournament as well as the last day of the school spring holiday.

But those present still filled Our Lady of Sorrows RC Church after the parade from Edward Bryant Primary School in London Road.

The service was taken by the Rev Andy Lowe, of Felpham Methodist Church.

Mrs Hennessy used the occasion to present several awards.

Paul Summerfield received a wood badge, to signify his end of training, for his work as the group scout leader for the 11th Bognor Group.

Arthur Olsen received a warrant as assistant district commissioner for Scouts and Tim Holland and Kirsten Scott were presented with warrants for their work with the 1st Felpham Sea Scouts.

The collection at the service was in aid of the Midhurst charity, Dreams Come True.
