School’s opera takes to the road

Pupils at Helenswood Academy are taking their self-penned opera on tour around 1066 country.

During the last academic year, the students worked together to create a four act opera, appropriately titled ‘Brave Enough to be Yourself’

The performances will take place at several schools, including Ark Blacklands Primary, Churchwood Primary academy, St Mary Magdalene Catholic Primary School and St Peter and St Paul’s.

The story revolves around a young suffragette, who after becoming a soldier is caught up in the tragedy and turmoil of World War I.

The original songs are performed by our orchestra, cast and chorus.

Leader of the project, Ms Liz mason said “Our students have worked extremely hard on this project and were so determined to perform their opera again that they asked for this tour.

“I am delighted so many schools are supporting our work and the performing arts in and around Hastings and Bexhill.
