The competition was organised by business start-up student Rosie Alvarez for her Spanish sauce products.

Entries from HND graphic design students were judged on Friday by David Rogers from PURE, brand designer for the Bognor Regis based sauce firm.

David has been working closely with Rosie since 2010, when she first decided to look into setting up the company.

She said: “David is an expert in his field with his team, based in Nottingham. He has offered specialist advice, support and guidance to me as a small start-up, despite working on much larger, well-known campaigns for much larger companies.

“Over the last year, I enrolled on a business start-up course at Chichester College and business Hot House programme via the University of Chichester to help develop the business acumen to help start up my company, La Saucy Salsa, and learn how to drive the business forward.

“Through attending the college, I was introduced to Liane Grogan and was able to pitch my business to her and colleagues to secure some financial assistance for La Saucy Salsa. In return, we explored how we could help the students of the college to obtain real life work experience through getting them involved in my business.”

Lecturer Daniel Freaker came on board and the project was set up for the year-two students to help design a brand seasonal gift pack as part of the unit on which the students were working.

Rosie added: “On this occasion, they were given experience first hand in what is truly involved in working to tight deadlines and with brand requirements, plus a real expert was able to offer them some first-hand professional advice to help guide them and motivate them to create something sensational.”

Winner Josh Reynolds will have his design made up to sell at Christmas shows in Goodwood and Liverpool, as part of the La Saucy Salsa product range.

Rosie said: “His box stood out immediately as a La Saucy Salsa brand extension. We also selected Bart Ladosz as a second winner because his designs were so good and we will develop his gift tube in the new year.”

In addition, Alison Girdlestone, catering and hospitality lecturer, is arranging for first-year students to make a meal using Rosie’s products.

The recipes created will form part of their exam work and a competition to find the best will be judged by a professional chef on January 8 and 15, when the students will create their dishes at the college.
